Instructors

Jeff Hornung

As Jeff developed and evolved as a woodturner, he began teaching others.  One of the best ways to share what you’re passionate about is to teach.  Local demos turned into traveling demos.  Those lead into National and International Symposiums demonstrations as well.  He is Co-Chair of the Woodworking Studio and one of the woodturning instructors at Craft Alliance School of Art and Craft in St. Louis, and he loves being able to share what he has learned with his students.

Finishing The Finish
(Friday 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Saturday 2:00pm - 3:00pm)
In this seminar we discuss a number of popular finishing products.  Sanding sealers, abrasive pastes, friction polish, waxes, lacquers and poly.  Real time demonstration of several finishing techniques you can use to take your woodturning to the next level.  Also covered is the difference between penetrating oils and surface or film finishes...how and when you would use each option.  I will cover food safe finishing and what you need to know if making items designed to be used for food.  Since everything starts with a good surface we will start by talking about finishing cuts and sanding.  Everything you need to know to get a great finish on your wood turned items, every time.

Morocco Blue
(Friday 2:00pm - 3:00pm, Saturday 4:00pm - 5:00pm)
Take a walk on the artistic side of woodturning as I create my award winning Morocco Blue Bowl.  Wood selection, tools, form, coloring and using contrasting wax all come together to create this stunning piece.  I’ll provide tips on texture and offer several different options for airbrushing setup.  You don’t need a lot of extra equipment to use these techniques.

Beginning Woodturning
(Friday 4:00pm - 5:00pm, Sunday 10:30am - 11:30am)

This seminar is gear toward the beginning turner though experienced turners may get some great info too!  I’ll cover lathes and their use plus chucks and creating holding points.  We will discuss a number of common woodturning tools, sharpening and basic cuts.  Everything you need to know to start your woodturning journey or tune up your basic skills to take your work to the next level.

Specialty Tools for Woodturning
(Saturday 10:00am - 11:00am, Sunday 12:00pm - 1:00pm)

Beads, boxes, hand chased threads and texture.  Here we cover and number of different specialty tools to give you a creative edge with your turnings.  Sharpening, tool use and design options and examples.  Let me show you just how adding a simple decorative element to your work can turn a nice piece into a show stopper!

The Cutting Edge Sharpening your Woodworking Tools
(Saturday 12:00pm - 1:00pm, Sunday 2:00pm - 3:00pm)

Almost sharp isn’t sharp at all!  I’ll show you how to care for many of your edged woodworking tools.  Hand plane blades, bench chisels, turning tools and even your pocket knife!  Sharpening is vital but it doesn’t have to be complicated.  I demonstrate some hand sharpening options, the Tormek System and jigs plus popular woodturning tool sharpening systems.  We’ll discuss stone, CBN and diamond wheels, card sharpeners, tool steel, tempering and edge geometry.  Remember, your cuts are only as good as the sharpness of your tools!
